Finishing the Cake


Step 1

To finish the cake, place a cake layer on a cake plate or serving platter (reserving the most even layer for the top) and spread with cooled custard.

Step 2

Top with another layer of cake, then custard, then one more layer of cake.

Step 3

Cover the top and sides of the cake with the remaining custard.

Step 4

Coat the cake with the cake crumbs.

Step 5

Chill until ready to serve, at least 2 hours. Serve the same day.

Brooklyn's Very Own Blackout Cake

This one is so tastey, it is even a favorite (supposedly) of Barbara Streisand.



Ingredients

1 1/4 cups softened butter
3 cups sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted
3 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 1/3 cups boiling water
3/4-1 cup roasted slivered almond

 

Ganache
18 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
2 tablespoons butter, cut up
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation


Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.


Step 2

Grease and flour 2 9-inch cake pans.


Step 3

Tap out excess flour.


Step 4

In a large bowl beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 1-2 minutes.
